Coral Castillo: The Fashion Designer Infusing Mexican Heritage into Contemporary Style

Coral Castillo, a visionary fashion designer from Mexico City, has captivated the fashion world with collections that beautifully merge her deep Mexican heritage with modern design sensibilities. Her pieces are a vibrant tribute to cultural traditions, blending powerful symbols of femininity and strength while celebrating her Latin roots. Elements like Otomi embroidery and macramé play a pivotal role in her creations, each piece embodying empowerment, elegance, and intricate craftsmanship.

Her designs reflect an effortless fusion of bold, delicate, and feminine elements, with striking silhouettes and a masterful use of texture and layers. Coral’s journey into fashion began early, sparked by her mother’s work as a dressmaker. She was inspired by the transformative power of fashion, which led her to create her own garments despite a lack of formal training. In 2005, she began designing for a select clientele, marking the start of her career. Her success encouraged her to pursue formal education at The Art Institute of California - San Francisco, where she honed her skills. Coral’s dedication to her craft has earned her prestigious accolades, including the Moss Adams Fashion Innovator award in 2019.

Many fashion enthusiasts will recognize Coral from Project Runway Season 19, where she emerged as a finalist, or from Hulu’s STITCHED, where she triumphed in episode 5. In a recent interview with HOLA! USA, Coral shared insights into how her Mexican heritage shapes her designs, her creative process, and her love for macramé. She also offered valuable advice for aspiring Latina designers, providing an inspiring glimpse into her journey.

What inspired your passion for fashion design, and what are your main sources of inspiration?

"My mother’s work as a dressmaker sparked my passion for fashion design. Watching her turn a simple piece of fabric into a stunning dress and seeing the joy it brought to women inspired me to create that same feeling. My mother’s artistry showed me the transformative power of fashion and encouraged me to pursue this creative field."

How does your Mexican heritage influence your designs, and how do you incorporate these values into your collections?

"My designs are deeply influenced by the traditions of Mexico, particularly Otomi embroidery and macramé, which are central to Mexican craftsmanship. My creative journey is a blend of Aztec theology, poetry, the resilience of the Mexican Revolution, and the spirit of indigenous people. I aim to bring these elements to life through vibrant colors, textures, and the stories they tell, offering a glimpse into the beauty and complexity of Mexican history and culture."

What sparked your interest in macramé, and did you have an ‘aha’ moment?

"I’ve always loved the tactile nature of macramé. It allows me to experiment with texture and layer different materials, creating dramatic shapes and effects. During the pandemic, I was redoing my home in a bohemian style and stumbled upon a macramé curtain that captured my attention. I thought, 'I can create this myself,' and began learning the art of macramé. What started as a home project soon became an integral part of my design process, adding a unique texture and strength to my work."

With her innovative approach and deep connection to her heritage, Coral Castillo is steadily carving a space for herself in the fashion world, empowering women and preserving the beauty of Mexican culture through her artistry.

With a simple Google search, I dove into the world of macramé, learning the essential knots and techniques. What began as a curiosity soon became more than just a new skill—it became a therapeutic escape. As I knotted and wove, a calming sense of relaxation enveloped me, providing solace during uncertain times. My interest in macramé quickly expanded beyond decorating my home; I noticed its presence in various corners of Mexico, adding creativity and elegance to spaces. Inspired by its beauty, I decided to integrate macramé into my fashion designs. What drew me to this art form was its strength, almost like weaving an armor of grace.

"Macramé became more than a hobby; it became a key part of my creative expression, breathing life into my designs and connecting me to a rich tradition of craftsmanship."

What messages or emotions do you aim to convey through your designs?

"I love combining strength and softness in my work, blending structured, bold elements with delicate, feminine touches to create an ethereal, weightless feel. At the heart of my design philosophy is a powerful mission: to empower women and celebrate their individuality. Fashion should not hide or conceal but rather reveal—accentuating the unique beauty and strength within every woman.

I believe that clothing should serve as a tool for empowerment, allowing women to embrace who they are with pride. My goal is not to simply cover the body with fabric, but to celebrate the body, to help women feel confident, strong, and beautiful in their own skin."

"Ultimately, my goal is simple yet profound: I want every woman who wears my creations to stand tall and be proud of who they are. Because true beauty and confidence radiate from within, and fashion should reflect the strength and authenticity that defines each woman."

How has your experience on Project Runway influenced your career and creative process?

"Being a finalist on Project Runway was an eye-opening experience, full of invaluable lessons that continue to shape me. One of the most significant takeaways was the power of color. Before the show, I mainly worked with black, but Project Runway pushed me to embrace a broader spectrum of hues while still staying true to my aesthetic.

It also taught me to work under pressure, to think creatively within tight deadlines, and to collaborate effectively with others. These challenges helped me grow as both a designer and as an individual, pushing me toward even greater artistic endeavors."

"Project Runway taught me to explore new colors without compromising my core aesthetic, and to appreciate how color can evoke strength and identity in my designs."

What emerging fashion trends excite you, and which would you like to explore in future collections?

"I’m constantly drawn to trends that inspire my creativity, and there are a few that have truly captured my attention. One is the powerful use of red. This fiery, passionate color excites me, and I’m eager to incorporate it into my upcoming designs. Red’s timeless appeal makes it a perfect statement color for my collections.

I’m also captivated by the delicate allure of summer sheers. The lightness of sheer fabrics paired with the intricate textures of macramé creates a beautiful contrast. I envision creating ethereal looks by combining sheer skirts with macramé, offering an elegant and whimsical vibe.

Another trend that intrigues me is sculpted sleeves. The artistry behind these sleeves adds a modern, sculptural touch to fashion, and I’m excited about the creative possibilities they present. I hope to explore this trend soon, fusing modern artistry with timeless elegance."

"In the world of fashion, trends are the canvases upon which designers paint their visions. For me, these trends aren’t just fleeting fads; they are sources of inspiration that fuel my passion for creating. Stay tuned, as I explore these trends and transform them into wearable art."

What piece of wisdom or key lesson would you share with Latinas aspiring to break into the fashion industry?

"For my fellow Latinas, I have two important pieces of advice: hard work and staying informed. These are the pillars that can open doors to countless opportunities.

First, I urge you to embrace hard work. Our determination can set us apart, and by giving our all, we not only show commitment but also create pathways to success that once seemed out of reach.

Staying informed is also crucial. Knowledge is power. The fashion world is constantly evolving, and staying ahead of trends and industry news is key to making informed decisions.

So, to all the Latinas out there: Your dedication and knowledge are the keys to your future. Commit to working hard, stay curious, and never stop learning. The potential is limitless, and your success is within reach."

"And for aspiring designers: Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Trust your instincts and be open to new experiences. For example, I recently teamed up with CHEETOS Mac 'N Cheese to create the CHEETOS Mac 'N Cheese x Coral Castillo MAC’ramé Collection. It was my first time designing shoes, and although challenging, it was incredibly rewarding. The process was both fun and challenging, pushing me to embrace a new creative challenge."

"So, Latinas, remember: hard work and knowledge are your keys to a brighter future. Never stop learning about the industry you're passionate about, and your success will be well within your reach." — Coral Castillo
