Utah Fashion Show Celebrates Women and Cultures from Around the World

Hundreds of supporters gathered at the Zions Bank Corporation building in Midvale to celebrate diverse cultures and the 20 models who represented them.

The event marked the 14th annual fashion show and gala hosted by Women of the World, a Utah nonprofit dedicated to supporting refugee women.

Samira Harnish, co-founder and executive director of the nonprofit, addressed the audience before the show, saying, “When you see each participant walking down the runway tonight, consider the incredible journey they have undertaken—fleeing violence and oppression, leaving behind jobs, lives, and families, hoping only for a safe night’s sleep. Their beauty stems not just from their features and clothing, but from their strength and courage in seeking a better life here in Utah.”

The models represented a diverse array of countries, including Rwanda, Colombia, Nepal, Iraq, Yemen, Mexico, Venezuela, Afghanistan, Somalia, Uganda, Sudan, Syria, Malaysia, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Peru, and Ukraine.

As each model walked the runway, an audio message shared their personal journey and the impact Women of the World has had on their lives. Traditional songs from their homelands accompanied their steps, with many dancing and smiling brightly as they took the stage.

Samar from Syria waved her country’s flag as she danced. Mila from Malaysia expressed that, with WOTW, she never feels alone. Loane, a student at Weber State University, received a scholarship through the organization. Naween from Afghanistan shared her love for Utah, crediting the nonprofit for its support.

The show also featured two inspiring mother-daughter duos: Fathom and Zainab from Somalia and Olga and Sofia from Ukraine, highlighting the strength of families united in a new beginning.
