Exclusive Interview with Marcos Valenzuela – The Creative Mind Behind Tiberius
Designer Marcos Valenzuela: From Colombia to Vienna

Marcos Valenzuela was born in Colombia with dreams of becoming an opera singer. However, his life took an unexpected turn when he met the love of his life and transformed Tiberius into a successful fashion house.
His journey in fashion began at the age of 17. While studying Fashion Design, he simultaneously pursued dance and singing. Initially, he realized that his true passion was not in fashion but on stage.
A friend invited him to visit the Vienna Conservatory, where he continued his music and dance studies. However, destiny had other plans—meeting the owner of Tiberius changed his path. Marcos transformed what was once a fetish shop into a respected fashion label.
We had the opportunity to meet Marcos and discuss his creative process at Tiberius and the romantic story that led to his career in fashion.
For those who don’t know you, tell us about your background.
Born in Bogotá, Colombia, I have been based in Vienna since 1999. I am a fashion designer, an opera singer, and a dancer. For the past 11 years, I have been the creative mind behind Tiberius.
When did you realize you wanted to be a fashion designer?
My passion for fashion emerged early on. I come from a generation influenced by MTV, beauty pageants (a typical fascination for Latinos), and, of course, the iconic Barbie—my first muse.
What is it like being in the fashion industry?
It’s like a rollercoaster ride! You love the thrill, the adrenaline, and the emotions. There are highs, lows, and unexpected turns where you sometimes question your choices, but ultimately, the movement and risk make you feel alive.

What was your first job in the fashion industry?
Oh dear… I designed prom dresses for girls from my generation—ages ago!
How has your life changed since becoming the designer at Tiberius?
The biggest and most difficult change was leaving my life on stage. I never imagined that being a designer would demand so much time. My days start at 5 a.m. and end at 10 p.m. Despite the demands, I love every second of my work and everything I do for my label.
Describe your role at Tiberius.
I create, organize, plan, communicate, and work with my hands. I take pride in caring for my clients and would describe myself as an all-rounder at Tiberius. Most importantly, I have fun at work!
What do you love most about your work?
Fashion is communication. It allows me to convey messages globally through clothing, accessories, colors, and textures. I love being able to express emotions and ideas without words, using fashion as my language.
What advice would you give to those starting in the fashion business?
Your product should be honest and authentic. Take time to discover who you are—but listen with your heart, not your ego.
What inspires you?
Inspiration is spontaneous, an impulse. Some things that fuel my creativity are dark chocolate, music, long runs, great conversations, flirting, and magical smiles.
How do you see fashion in Austria?
I view Austrian fashion with great respect and gratitude. Although I wasn’t born in Austria, I am honored to be recognized as an Austrian designer. From a business perspective, I see enormous potential in the market.
Is there a big difference between Colombia and Austria?
Yes and no. The socio-political, historical, and geographical factors shape a country and its people. However, human desires and fundamental needs are universal.
What defines Tiberius?
Tiberius is sensual and desirable, ironic, provocative, and a little romantic.
What is your creative process like?
I am a structured person. My process starts with a theme, followed by research to establish the foundation for a collection. Once my mind is filled with information, I begin sketching. Then, my team and I experiment with patterns and textures until we achieve our vision.
How would you describe Tiberius clients?
Tiberius clients are sensual, desirable, ironic, provocative, and slightly romantic individuals. They appreciate details and quality.
How would you describe yourself?
I am a positive, disciplined, and happy romantic who enjoys details, laughter, and chocolate muffins.
What project are you currently working on?
That’s a secret! Hihihi!
