From Banana Fields in Honduras to U.S. Runways: A Designer’s Journey

LOS ANGELES, United States — I once believed my future lay in the banana fields of Honduras, working alongside my siblings. Yet today, my fashion designs are displayed in exclusive boutiques in Beverly Hills, San Francisco, and beyond.

A Life of Purpose and Vision

Every moment of my life feels meaningful. I have always chosen to see the bright side, believing each phase is a stepping stone guided by my own decisions. Life is a treasure map, and I must be prepared for when I discover its greatest rewards.

Born and raised in Sonaguera, Colón, a small town in Honduras where most people cultivate bananas, I grew up watching my brothers work the fields. I always assumed I would follow in their footsteps. A career in fashion was never part of my dreams.

The Spark of Creativity

My mother, dedicated to raising my six brothers and me, was constantly busy. She couldn't read or write and never checked my grades, unaware that I was the top student in school. While I was frequently named 'Student of the Year,' she was unable to attend my ceremonies, so my sister took her place. Many assumed I was an orphan.

Despite this, our family was rich in love. As the youngest, my siblings protected and nurtured me. My mother often told them, “Take care of Merlin; he is special.”

At the age of eight, my third-grade teacher introduced us to sewing using blankets and thread. I quickly excelled, finishing assignments ahead of my classmates. When I asked my teacher, Evelyn, for more to do, she encouraged me to buy fabric so she could teach me to sew shorts. That moment ignited my passion for fashion. The hum of the sewing machine became my sanctuary, a place where I felt complete.

Though my first creation—a pair of yellow-striped shorts—now seems laughable, I wore them with pride. Since then, I have never shied away from showcasing my designs. Today, everything I wear is my own creation, from my shoes to my underwear.

From Honduras to the United States: The Journey to Becoming a Designer

At 12, after saving for a year with my brother to buy bicycles, I instead chose to purchase a sewing machine. I began crafting aprons for my mother to sell. Over time, with great effort, I pursued architecture while simultaneously honing my sewing skills at night.

Eventually, I secured a job with an interior design company. There, I met my mentor, who helped shape my career. Thanks to her, I was able to migrate to the United States and continue my journey in design.

Arriving in America brought immense challenges. Being Central American made the road more difficult. Initially, I earned very little, especially since I did not speak English. Even apprentices I trained earned more than I did. But rather than feel discouraged, I used these challenges as motivation to push myself further.

Carving My Place in the Fashion World

Competing against major fashion houses is not easy. Large brands pay celebrities to wear their designs, sending the message that individuals like me can never reach their level. Yet, I am determined to make my mark. I focus on the American market, where opportunities and support exist for independent designers.

When people first see me, my bold and unconventional style often surprises them. It takes time for them to embrace my aesthetic. My journey has not been easy, but I see every setback as a lesson, a rehearsal for greater success.

My latest collection sold out completely! My designs are now housed in high-end boutiques in Beverly Hills, San Francisco, and other cities. Still, the fashion world is unpredictable. There are months without work, but I do not despair—I rely on my savings. Other times, I work tirelessly for days, only to collapse into bed for a week of rest. This is my reality.

Dreams of Home

At times, I feel melancholic about not having children or a family with me every day. But I believe my purpose extends beyond that. After years of dedication, I dream of returning to Honduras, buying a home in Islas de la Bahía, and embracing a peaceful life by the sea.

For now, my journey continues, fueled by passion, perseverance, and the unwavering belief that my designs belong on the world’s stage.
