Giselle Rosales: From Cuban Immigrant to Miss Ecuador 2025, A Story of Identity and Triumph

In a story that intertwines dreams, migration, and national identity, Giselle Rosales, a 21-year-old woman of Cuban origin, was crowned Miss Ecuador 2025 in August. Her victory has captivated the South American nation, sparking both celebration and debate about what it means to represent a country.
Rosales’s journey to the crown began far from the pageant stage. She arrived in Ecuador as a young child of seven, settling with her family in San Antonio de Machala. Like many immigrants, her family sought "a better life," leaving behind the difficulties in their home country. Growing up in Ecuador, she nurtured a passion for modeling from a young age, building a successful career by winning local contests such as Fashion Weekend Ecuador and being crowned Queen of Machala in 2022.
However, her path to the national title was unique. When she won the coveted crown on August 16, she did so as a Cuban citizen. This detail became the center of a national conversation, with some questioning the eligibility of a non-citizen to hold the title. Addressing the controversy with transparency, Rosales stated, "At no point in my life have I said that I was born in Ecuador. Because it’s not true, and why lie?" She has always acknowledged her Cuban birth while affirming her deep connection to Ecuador, the country she has called home for 14 years.

The situation was formally resolved on September 17, when President Daniel Noboa granted her Ecuadorian citizenship by presidential decree. This official act solidified her role as the nation's official representative.

Now, as the duly recognized Miss Ecuador 2025, Giselle Rosales—a psychology and education student—is preparing for her next challenge: representing Ecuador on the global stage at the Miss International 2026 pageant in Tokyo. Her story is more than a beauty queen's tale; it is a modern narrative of identity, belonging, and the complex fabric of a nation's pride.
