On Wednesday, October 30, the Volvo Asunción Fashion Week Spring–Summer 2025 edition opened with an exclusive fashion show by Paraguayan designer Tanya Maldonado. Held in the designer's new atelier, the intimate event welcomed special guests, influencers, and clients, offering them a behind-the-scenes look at the garment creation process-from workshop to catwalk. Maldonado presented a capsule collection inspired by the Dolce Vita and the city of Milan, featuring elegant, distinctive silhouettes that celebrate femininity. "Art and fashion merge to give a Latin and European essence to their movements," the designer said.
The show marked the beginning of the 21st edition of Paraguay's largest fashion event, which will continue on Saturday, November 2, and Sunday, November 3, at the Gran Hotel del Paraguay. This year's edition is the largest to date, featuring over 50 Paraguayan designers alongside international fashion creators, with more than 3,000 total participants including models and audience members. The event will also include activations and brand presences from Volvo, Logitex, Stabilo, Keyroad, Guess, Aperol, Therma, Dr Lemon, Ron Residentas, Lavazza, Bodega Undurraga, Fortín, and El Mercadillo.
The Asunción Times spoke with Hugo Vasquez, Director of Asunción Fashion Week, about how the event has evolved over two decades. "The designers of Paraguay are really good now," Vasquez said. "It was a little different 21 years ago, and the people of Paraguay love fashion now-that was different ten years ago. That's the most beautiful thing." He noted that Asunción Fashion Week has become quite international, with many local designers now bringing experience from New York, Paris, and Milan Fashion Weeks back to Paraguay. "This year, more Paraguayan designers have experience at the highest level, and they are back participating at Asunción Fashion Week. It's going to be really interesting."
Vasquez also highlighted the growth of the local modeling industry. "The Paraguayan models are really nice, really beautiful-the level is really high now. It's like, wow," he said. "Fashion is now a big industry in Paraguay. Twenty years ago, it was a hobby. But now, we can really live with fashion-all of us." For young Paraguayans hoping to enter the industry, his advice was direct: "Study, study, study! Of course, it helps if you can join an agency, but you need to study and work a lot. That's the way."
